How Dry We Are ! December, January and Febi'uary have come and gone. What dry months they were! Old residents of the Bay of Plenty have difficulty in recalling a summer that has been so drj T . Indeed, the three .months just past have been more in keeping with the Great Australian Desert than with that fertile coastal fanning territorjr which lives up to its name of "The Bay of Plenty." Cheerful farmers have had to do their best to not be depressed since New Year, as they watched pastures refusing to grow the usual profusion of summer feed. Without doubt the farming community will have a reduced income for the second half of this dairying season, because of the decline in milk production. No one in this district needs to be told that this Avill mean somewhat less ready cash available for flowing into retail trade. However, the autumn is beginning. Cheerful farmers are quite sure the autumn rains will set in soon, and also that the earth will respond with vigorous growth because it has been Mell warmed all the summer. But even if the Bay of Plenty has had an exceptionally dry time, other parts of New Zealand seem to have had a summer of good rains and good growth. Even Hitler in Europp complains that the winter there has been exceptionally cold and that this has helped those terrible Russians to get too offensive. That being so, we Bay ef Plenty people may find some consolation for our drought in the success that has attended our Russian Allies during their record cold winter.
