A DUSTY SUBJECT

Caledonian Open Night The second of the Caledonian Society's Open Nights is to be held in the Caledonian Hall, King Street, tonight. Modern and old-time dances will make* up a programme which will no doubt prove as popular as it did when the first of these functions was held recently.

ONCE again to the breach, and the subject of a municipal rubbish collection was thrust (like greatness) upon the innocent heads of the Chamber of Commerce last Monday evening. Like previous discussions —it got nowhere. The same old story of rating difficulties, cost and collection. As long as we are prepared to put up with these futile arguments, we must naturally remain the only borough in the South Auckland province without such a service. The amazing feature appears to be that everybody, even those who expound the difficulties—'want' the service. Perhaps, however with so many other and more vital questions at strike at the present time, it would be as well to postpone the subject until a more favourable opportunity presents itself. It has to be admitted that local bodies have their hands more than full just now, but a deferment must not be allowed to grow into a permanent burial, and we sincerely trust that the time will not be far distant when by a levy of a shilling per month on the householder, our city fathers will remedy the standing evil by the introduction of a weekly rubbish collection.

Strange Company They must be great sticklers for etiquette in the King Country. A recent edition of one of the district journals contained the information that "Private J. —. of Trentham Camp, is at present the guest of his wife and family."
