£100 IN FINES AT OPOTIKI

THREE RAIDS BY POLICE

Three raids were carried out by the Opotiki police on Saturday in connection with gaming offences and in each case large quantities of bookmaking material were recovered. A sequel to these operations were heard in the Opotiki Court on the same day when three persons faced charges arising from the raids. Messrs J. D. Clark and J. T. Merry, J.P.'s, occupied the bench, and Sergeant J. Isbister conducted the prosecutions on behalf of the police. Sidney Michael "VVaterson, aged 33, St. John Street, Opotiki, labourer was charged with assisting in conducting the business of a common gaming house, kept or used by one, Nora Agnes Hickey, and situated at Church Street, Opotiki. Defendant pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £25. Nora Agnes Hickey, Church Street. Opotiki, was charged that on February 14 at Opotiki she was the occupier of a shop situated at Church Street, Opotiki, and used same as a common gaming house. Defendant was convicted and fined £25. * Horace Clark, aged 41 years, residing in Main Stret, Opotiki, was charged that on February 14 he carried on the business of a bookmaker. Defendant was convicted and fined £50. —-News.
