A DESERT XMAS
FESTIVITIES IN HOSPITALS
MEN ENJOY THEMSELVES
The following is an, extract from a letter received by Mrs R. Gray, of Kutarere, from her brother, Pte Murray Nowland, of Wliakatane. Pte Nowland intimated in his letter that he is making good progress to recovery. "I am in a New Zealand hospital and we were all brought to our own hospital on the 21/12/41 so we would be here for Xmas, and a very enr' ioyablc Xmas it was. The ward is decorted with coloured papers, balloons and lamps and we woke up Xmas day and found a small cotlon Red Cross bag with a wallet and a couple of little things and later in the day we were given a parcel from the Patriotic people of New Zealand which held all the usual contents of tinned things, hankies, soap, razor blades, chocs, etc. and each man managed to get a bottle of beer so it wasn't so bad after all. Some sisters and orderlies came through the wards singing Xmas car- 1 ols, only they didn't stay., It's good to be in our own hospital and have our own sisters and orderlies and my word they are good to us too. Well worth praise. Lady Freyberg came through the ward and visited us, she was kindly faced and all smiles when I saw her. General Freyberg came through the ward this morning, and shook hands with all of us and chattered about proceedings up the way and he said that New Zealanders played a bigger part in the Desert than most people think."
