FARM LABOUR
CRITICAL STAGE REACHED
DEMANDS OF THE ARMY
At a special meeting of the Motu-eko-Riwaka branch of the Farmers* Union held to discuss the question of relieving the shortage ol" labour on farms, the following resolution was carried unanimously:— ''Farmers in the Motueka and Riivaka districts feel that the relationship between the primary producer and the military services has drifted to a critical stage in recent months and that the country is rapidly finding itself unable to provide -lie normal requirements in foodstuffs. "They call on the authorities to realise the need for the retention of farm labour on the land if it is to ward off serious economic trouble, especially for the next and folloAvi.ng years." Speakers stressed the gravity of the situation and said that it was the duty of the Farmers' Union to draw the attention of the people to the position. There was already a shortage of vegetables and the position Avi 11 grow worse unless there is adequate labour.
