GALLANT ACTION

LOCAL SOLDIER'S NARROW

ESCAPE

INCIDENT IN EAST

The general officer commanding the second N.Z.E.F., Major-General B. C. Freyberg, has directed that the following act of gallantry should be brought to the attention of all ranks. No 22703 Private A. T. Price, -of Tauranga, was driving a Bren gun carrier when a petrol tin burst and exploded setting fire to the carrier and blowing the commander Corporal Cresswell out of the machine. Cpl. Cresswell, who is a son of Mr and Mrs H. B. Cresswell, of Edgecumbe, was pinned under the tracks of the carrier and Private Price who had jumped out returned to his seat in the carrier which by this time was blazing fiercely, and endeavoured to start the engine with a view to running the carrier clear. He was unable to do this and with great presence of mind and complete disregard of personal danger, •engaged reverse gar and backed off using the self starter. Private Price then jumped down and dragged Cpl Cresswell free. While carrying out this rescue Private Price suffered burns to both arms and one leg, but by his gallant conduct he undoubtedly saved Cpl Cresswell's life.
