RAJPUT WARRIOR

SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

MAHARAJAH TAKES PART

Weapons consecrated at a famous temple in Jaipur were recently presented in public to the Maharajah

of Rajputana in honour of his return from active service abroad. This ceremony, appropriate to Rajputana where men have from time immemorial been brought up to the use of arms, and a high standard of physical fitness, will remind those who know the writings of Tod, the historian, of imposing rites described by him. During the month of Aswin, lie says particular respect was jjaid in Rajputana to the double-edged sword and to the banner of the princely house. But at all times of the year was the Rajput's attachment to his sword displayed; on it, for instance, he took his oath. Examples of this manifestation of the Rajput military spirit could be multiplied from the historian's: vivid pages. During the recent ceremony, an address by the Maharajah's subjects recalled the part Rajputs are playing in the war, and emphasised their determination to maintain their glorious traditions.
