THE BENZINE ALLOWANCE
Sir, —There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding amongst farmers in respect to the use of their small allowance of petrol, and the method in which it may be used. I have come in contact with one case where a farmer saved up sufficient petrol through denying himself a trip 01 two to Whakatane, toi enable himsalf to give his wife and children a day at the seaside before school opened again. So far, however they have been disappointed in their little pleasure in being told, rightly or wrongly that he could not use his benzine for purpose? other than for going into Whakatane. This seems hard on the kiddies—could the Beacon enlighten us and indicate the true use to which the benzine allowance can be put. Yours etc.. R. J. REDSHAW, R.D. (We have taken steps to submit the above to the postmaster (chairman of the local committee) and have been assured that no person under existing conditions has any right to use benzine obtained under license for pleasure purposes. Farmers by virtue of their declaration undertook to utilise the benzine allowed them for weekly trips to town for the purpose of obtaining necessary provisions. Any use of cars in excess of these trips would therefore be considered contrary to the regulations. Eld).
