RIVERS CONTROL ACT
REPLY TO COUNCIL
REGULATIONS HELD UP
A letter from the Minister of Public Works received by the Whakatane County Council on December 16, 1941, was replying to the council's query and advising that under the present extremely critical conditions it is impossible to say when Catchment Boards will be set up. This central council under the Act has! not yet been constituted as the local bodies have not yet completed their recommendations in regard to their nominations for membership of the council. Even when the'council is constituted it is not thought that it will be possible in the. near future to proceed with the setting up of Catchment Boards except in cases where conditions warrant urgent action, and it is thought that the Wliakatane area cannot be regarded as one in which urgent action in connection with major works is warranted. The chairman explained that the Hon. Minister's letter was in reply to a query from the council sent on the 21st October last asking that Hi is council be advised, before any Wliakatane County Catchment Board was set up. The letter Avas received.
