HOTEL OFFENDS
OPOTIKI CASE
At the Opotiki Police Court last -week, before Mr E.- L. Walton, S.M., Edwin Wilfred Oswald was charged that on December 15 he failed to comply with the lighting regulations, in that he failed to effectively screen a light. Defendant entered a plea of guilty. Sergeant J. Isbister stated that on December 15, Constable McCurrach had occasion, to warn the staff of the Masonic Hotel. On the same night the upstairs windows were unscreened. Defendant had been previously warned by the wardens and police. Mr E. C. East, who appeared for defendant, said that the Avindows were facing the south and could not be seen from the sea. In the bedrooms notices had been pasted on the mirrors. The offending lights ■ were in the bathroom and a bedroom, and the maids, go round the hotel before tea to make sure the iblinds are drawn. A fine of £1 with costs 30s was imposed.
