QUICKSILVER FIELD

RICH QUEENSLAND DEPOSIT MAKE EMPIRE INDEPENDENT? Sublimely unaware of the potentially rich deposits at Ngawha, North Auckland, Queensland folk believe that the British Empire's only commercial quicksilver field exists at Kilkivan, 150 miles from Brisbane. The deposit has been worked in a small way for some years, and one company is now getting about a bottle (751b) of mercury a week. It is claimed that if the fiekl were fully exploited it would free the Empire from dependence on any outside sources of supply. The assistance of the Federal Government is being sought in its development. In the last year of peace Australia imported 60,0001b .of mercury from Spain, 15,0001b from Italy and 3001b from England. Mercury is used as a detonator of explosives, and its price per lb has risen from 6/- just before the war to 20/-. The Queensland Government geologist, Mr S. R. L. Shepherd, has reported that the possibilities at Kilkivan warrant a vigorous prospecting campaign to prove the size and values of the ores.
