AIR RAID TRENCHES
SUGGESTED FOR SCHOOL
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S MOVE
Presiding at this, month's meeting of the Borough Council, the deputyMayor, Mr S. S. Shapley, stated that favourable consideration should be given to the question of preparing air-raid slit trenches at the local school. He felt that although these might not be required such a move would instil more confidence in the parents. He asked councillors to express an opinioon as it would be necessary to make an early tion for the Government's subsidy.
Cr A. J. Canning said that he could not see that the enemy would visit Whakatane. "Bombs are costly things," he said, "and the enemywill want to drop every one to the best advantage." He said he did not think it wise to dig trenches in country towns throughout the Dominion*
"It can Happen here," was the theme of Cr C. S. Armstrong's remarks when he differed with CrCanning. "We shoukl take every precaution and must be iJrepared,** he said adding that the Council should approacli the School Commit-* tee regarding trenches.
It was decided that the Works Committee interview the School Committee.
