CONSIDERED UNNECESSARY

DOUGLAS STREET STRUCTURE

At this month's meeting of the Borough Council a suggestion was made by Cr T. J. Cummings that* the proposed reconstruction of the Douglas Street bridge be postponed. He said that at the present time the council should conserve as much finance as possible for the emergency which probably was to come, and added that the bridge did not serve a great deal of traffic and could be if unsafe. Cr J. Creeke- supported the speaker and suggested that the matter be referred back to the engineer with a view to repairing the bridge with temporary planking. The chairman, stated that the engineer regarded that state of th<S bridge as serious and said the "council should be "guided by him, whil« the clerk remarked that the work was in hand and that the council could not fence the bridge off except as a temporary measure' while repairs or reconstruction was being effected.
