STILL FAIRLY ACUTE

IT had been anticipated that the housing: shortage, for which this town had an unenviabfe reputation for many years prior to the war, would ha,ve been relieved as a result of the number of Government dwellings erected and of the undiminished building programme carried out by private section holders. However accommodation still appears to be at something of a premium. Enquiries at this office for board, flats, part houses or for straight-out rental or leasing propositions appear to be. undiminished. True the overflow from Ohope has been more or less absorbed into the Borough, and though the position can scarcely be described as acute, it is nevertheless surprisingly difficult. Families are still forced to live in cramped inadequate quarters, boarding houses are still taxed to capacity and many people still find it necessary to share houses. It will be interesting later on as the normal times return to note the figure of a settled and permanent population in Whakatane and compare it with the 1300 of pre-war days.
