RACING NOTES

APPROPRIATELY NAMEI> The three year old filly by Friday —Clink in Mr J. Campbell's stable at Riccarton has been named Cheap Lodging. She is a half-sister to Wardress, winner of the Canterbury Cup in November last, but who did not do too well in the Auckland Cup as expected. A SALAMAGANDI WINNER Consequent upon the victory of Piastre in the Auckland Cup, the Phalaris sire, Salamgandi, will now come into greater favour with New Zealand owners. RETAINS HIS BRILLIANCY The New Zealand bred High Caste, by Bulandshar—The Begum, who has now won £32,000 in stakes, principally from victories in Australia, has resumed work at Randwick after a few weeks' spell, in view of the Challenge Stakes. That he still retains his undoubted brilliancy was shown last week at Victoria Park, where between races, he skipped ovei half a mile in 46 1-5 sees. THE WELLINGTON! CUP The Wellington Cup two miles, has drawn 24 entries. It is to be run on 17th inst as Anniversary Day 22nd will not this year be observed as a public holiday. The northern horses nominated for the £2500 event are Lou Rosa and Beau Leon. Among the entrants are the successful hurdle re Master Lackliam and Renascor. TRENTHAM PRINCIPAL SPRINT Thirtj'-thrce sprinters have been listed for the Wellington Telegraph Handicap, including Route March, Anopheles, Sir Beau, Kentucky, Black Majesty, Prince Plato and Celebrity. Much interest will be taken in the running of the latter, the English bred mare by Nothing Venture—Cinna, winner of the Robinson Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. If the track is in good order she is likely to run out a very ■fast six furlongs.

TRAINING MODES Soon after his victory in the Great Northern Guineas the G.N. Derby candidate, Regal Fox, showed signs of shoulder lameness. His trainer, H. Goldfinch, of Avondale, thereafter put the Foxbridge oolt through a course of salt water swimming exercises, while his track work was restricted to easy pacing. In the running of the Derby be showed real staying power and won very easily. RACE MEETING DATES The Rangitikei Racing Club's autumn meeting is listed for February 28. The Matamata Club will bold its meeting, with retluced stakes on February 7, and the W aikato Club will race on February 21. It is understood that the Thames Jockey Club may postpone its January meeting for some months. OLD BILL IMPROVED After running in his Ellerslie engagements Old Bill was again slightly lame, but had made a good recovery when he arrived at Palmerston last week. His next public appearance will be in the Wellington Cup. H. WIGGINS RECOVERING H. N. Wiggins, who sustained a broken leg at Trentham in October, has returned to his home in Auckland, but fer some weeks yet will retain the use of crutches. BEAU LEON'S HANDICAP The Beau Pere —Lady Bede colt. Beau Leon, who performed just moderately in the earlier part of the season, has lately made a great improvement in his racing efforts. In the Auckland Clip he ran second to Piastre with 9.0, and evidently attracted the notice of the Auckland handicapper, for in the Summer Cup lie was allotted tO.H. In the Clifford Plate, 9.0, he was defeated by Lou Rosa so it is quite on the cards that the latter will be given a tidy weight for his next Flleislie engagement.
