A ROUGH SEASON

WORRIES OF A FARMER HAY CROPS SUFFER BADLY The unsettled weather of the present season lias proved more than trying to farmers, who would normally be in the midst of their hay harvesting'. The repeated showers are an ever present menace to the drying hay, and it is fearc-d that much of this year's harvest will be of poor quality owing to repeated soakings. Many farmers had declared their intention of not cutting until a definite improvement took place in the weather, 'but a number were misled by the apparent improvement only to have their crop thoroughly soaked in the downpours later on. The position of farmers who have to employ outside labour for the harvesting is unenviable as men engaged have been forced to stand by owing to rain. Hay bailing machinery and. crews have also been unable to work, and where the one machine serves a large district this has had the effect of setting back work in the whole area. The. lesser evil at the moment appears to be for farmers to leave their grass standing until an improvement takes place, but' here again the hay deteriorates by running to seed.
