MEAT POLICY

GOVERNMENT'S GUARANTEE STORAGE FOR THIS YEAR Discussing the meat position at last executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union, Mr Briscoe Moore pointed out that the Government had assumed substantial responsibilities. Firstly, it had 78,000 tons of meat at present in store; secondly, it had to share responsibility for any quantity of. meat unshipped this season up to 275,000 tons; and thirdly, it was responsible for production in excess of 275,000 tons. The Minister had" stated that the quantity of meat available for export this season might reach 350,000 tons, reducible by canning, deboning, etc. Against the estimated less on this guarantee the Government was withholding from the farmer an increase in tlie price of pelts, estimated to produce £275,000, and an increase in the price to be paid by the British Government for our meat that would probably approximate £1,000,000. The storage position, continued Mr Moore, is safe for this season unless something quite unforscc-n occurs. There would probably be some temporary local dislocations and delays, but in a general sense storage capacity should suffice, with something to spare.
