DRAINAGE—OUR BASIS OF PROSPERITY
HOW many are there who find time tc reflect that the prosperity which we. now enjoy is built entirely upon effective drainage. The tale of the soured swamp which was once the Rangitaiki Plains is too well known to need any further repetition, but the second sta,ge of transition, is the draining of the Plains, and the maintenance of the network, of channels which play so vital a part in the preservation of the 88,000 acres of pastureland upon which has been based the amazing growth of Whakatane and the thriving settle ments which surround it. Drainage is absolutely basic to our progress, and our very livelihood; it is fundamental to the ability of this district to maintain its share of primary produce, in the Dominion War Effort, it is essential to the maintenance of this community of 11,000 persons, and it means life to twenty thousand dairy cows, and a ponding number of beef ciattle, pigs and sheep.
