RACING NOTES

LOU ROSA'S PRIZE MONEY

Although he ran unluckily on two out of the four days at Ellerslie the stake money Avon by Lou Rosa amounted to £1200. As he generally strikes his best form in the second half of the season there is ample time for him to increase his winning account materially in the next

ew weeks

LLANDAFF MISSES

The very highly assesed LI and afl failed to get on to the winning list at the Auckland meeting, and his was a case of track work brilliancy not being repeated with the colours u/p. The size of the fields were per-* haps not in his favour and he will have a chance of reinstating himself with his ardent supporters at the Auckland mid-summer meeting this

month.

STILL UNDER A CLOUD

The HaAA'ke's Bay OAvned highlyfaricied candidate for the Auckland Cup, Yogi, Avas lame after a final gallop at Ellerslie and could not be started at the meeting. Whether he can be got right to compete at Trenthem this month is not yet knoAvn. ANOTHER BATTLEDRESS There is another Battledress in Sydney. She is a tAvo year old filly by Double ll'emoAe from Lady Sil-viu-s, and a half sister to the great Australian performer Tregilla. TURNED OUT Mr Frank Ormond's three year old Buna Sahib Avho Avas expected, to get on the Avinning list at Ellerslie, but Avhose engagements had to be cancelled, has now been turned out for an extended spell. RICCARTON AND ELLERSLIE Just noAv there is a controversy between northern and southern sport I ing Avriters on the subject of Avhich is the easier laao miles cup course that at Riccarton or Ellerslie. Just now a southern Avriter can claim to haAC the best of the argument Avhen he shows that the best time at Ellerslie is 3.23 Avhile the Riccarton record is 3.20 4-,"). Possibly the northerners will still maintain that Ellerslie' is the easier by the fact that the last five furlongs is slightly down grade, and should therefore make the faster time.

RACING CURTAILMENT So far eight racing' clubs in the Dominion with twelve racing clays have postponed their meetings on account of the petrol restrictions. A REMUNERATIVE PRICE When the Hamilton owned Vitement won the New Plymouth Handicap last week, defeating the hot favourite, Surveyor-General, the supporters received a dividend of nearly two score. AN ADMIRER The Victorian trainer, F. Godby, is an ardent admirer of the New Zealand bred High Caste. He recently presented to the Trainers 1 Association, Melbourne, a painting of "The Strawberry Bull" and said; "We've never seen one like him before, and we'll never see one like him again." THAMES JOCKEY CLUB The Thames summer meeting was to have been held on January 24, but the club has been notified that the course property will be required for other purposes. The club may decide to ask permission to race on some other course, probably Paeroa. NOT NOW IN FAVOUR

Up to the running of the Auckland Cup The Cartlinsil was fancied for this big two miles event, but his running was indeed moderate, and ho finished well back. In his next effort at the meeting he showed little improvement, ajid he ran as if, for the meantime at least, he had tired of the game. He certainly performed much below his capability, although produced in the pink of form by trainer J. W. Calhru. A REDUCED PROGRAMME The Wellington Racing Club has decided lo reduce its three days summer meeting to two days, and tiie pri/'." money for the Wellington Cup v.i.l be decreased from to SUoUC. As tin.- protit i'ruin the meeting will be del ated to the Patriot! :* Fund, it was thought that under present eircxmiNtaiiees £3500 would ton high lov the principal event.
