WHAT, NO SPUDS!
FORTUNATE WHAKATANE SUPPLY FROM KITCHEN 1
GARDENS
Local growers declare that the potato shortage 1 has not beep felt in Whakatane to the extent that it has in other centres. The reason given, is that most kitchen gardens in the Borough were Avell stocked with this useful vegetable, and as the season lias been an excellent one, the average householder is drawing a steady supply from his own resources. Dry mild weather has co-operated with the light sandy nature of the 1 soil to produce good crops, and as most neighbours are generous in this town, those who have not, are in many instances being steadily supplied by those who have.
Asked to comment on the 1 shortage of potatoes a xnan concerned with the wholesale produce trade said: "You cannot blame the growers; what with all this rain. they have had a very late season, consequently most of their potatoes are not yet matured. To dig now means a loss in total quantity, and on top of that they must consider seed for next year. Remember there was a shortage of seed this year and seed potatoes must be allowed to mature thoroughly if they are to be an?' good."
