WORK FOR YOUR LIVES?

Sir, —The people of New Zealand [ have been urged by their leaders, from the Governor-General clown to local body spokesmen to work like anything in order to assist New Zealand's war effort. "Work for your lives" is one of the mottos of the moment. That being so, settlers out on the Rangitaiki Plains have been disillusioned to notice in between, their daily routine of milking and harvesting on seven days a week that Government departments do not seem to be working for their lives. For instance there is a dredge which has been stationary on the bank of a drain since Christmas Eve: and that was a fortnight ago. Perhaps the dredge has broken down or run out of fuel. More likely it is the Lands Department keeping up its old prewar style of downing tools for two or three weeks: at Christmas and New Year. Can you tell me if that is so? If it is necesasry for the Governor-General and the cow-milk-ers to work for their lives,. then surely the Lands Department on the Rangitaiki Plains should set an example. After all, who pays the wages of the dredge hands? Why the taxpayers, of course. Yours etc., INQUIRER.
