CONSISTENCY

Vaalsmoss, a winner at Te Awamutu, scored in the County Handicap from Taku Kara, Balblair and 14 others, including The Champ, who ran fourth. The English mare Celebrity, a first day winner, was not started on account of the heavy track. WIN FOR BRIGHT IDEA Bright Idea piloted by Pascoe improved upon her second in the Grafton Hurdles on Boxing Day by winning the New Year Hurdles from the consistent Beverley and Ureklaw. She is owned and trained by J. M. Buchanan, of Ellerslie. Wliaremanea, ridden by J. L. Muir, fell during the running, was seriously injured and had to be destroyed. He was an aged gelding by Lucullus —Marble Queen, ownetl by Mr O. Nicholson and the Hon Elliot Davis, and trained by W. J. McLean. REPRESENTATIVE SCORES As generally expected the Midsummer Handicap went to the first favourite Representative, owned by Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P. He took the lead entering the straight and running very true won from Sir Simon and Sea Mist. - THE RACING CLUB HANDICAP The only withdrawal from the field of 13 in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap was Night Pilot. In the early stages the most prominent candidates were Round Up, Sly Fox, Lou Rosa and Erlick. Rounding the tpo stretch Lou Rosa assumed the lead, but entering the home turn was deposed by Sly Fox and Erlick, with Beau Leon moving up fast. A good race down resulted in Beau Leon 9.7 (J. Winder) scoring from Lou Rosa 8.8 (N. McKenzie) by half a length and the Monarch 7.0. Wardress 8.6 finished in fourth position. THE GREAT NORTHERN DERBY The contestants for the Great Northern Derby honours numbered eight, and Battledress, winner of the New Zealand Derby at Riccarton, was made favourite, with Regal Fox, ridden by A. E. Ellis, also spiritedly! supported. Route March led for over a mile, with River Plate and Regal Fox as his nearest attendants. Entering' the home run Battledress went up to the leaders and halfway down Regal Fox put in a brilliant run to score by half a length from Route March and Battledress with Hogarth a good fourth. PERFORMER OF HIGH RANK By his performance at the Auckland meeting Route Miar-ch, by Vaals ■ —Royal March, justified the claim to be included among the high rank performers.
