THE RURAL DELIVERY SERVICE

FULL sympathy will be felt for the district fanners who attended the protest meeting at Edgecumbe last week. There is little need here to go over the well known facts which back up to the hilt the case for the retention of the service. However, since last going to press it has been learnt that the order for the cutting down of the service was Do-minion-wide. The 'cut' is to apply everywhere and consideration of its effects has not been hurried or passed over. We are assured that its introduction has been, brought about by sheer and urgent necessity. The risk of making an exception of one district would therefore be open to precedent which would result in endless applications from less deserving areas. While the Beacon still desires to lend the Rangitaiki settlers its fullest co-operation in their efforts to reinstate the daily runs, we have been asked in. fairness to point out the position from the official, and therefore the national' point of view.
