HEAVY RAINFALL

FIGURES FOR THE YEAR WHAKATANE RECORDS The total rainfall for 1941 measured in Whakatane was 50.65 inches, which is considered a substantial figure well over the average. Compared 'with the year before (45.05 inches) it will be seen that it was 5% inches in excess, while the drop is still more noticeable for 1939 (the drought year) when, only 37.27 inches were recorded. The year may therefore be described as a wet one. though not excessively. Figures for December indicate that rain fell on 12 days, limited in all instances to brief showers, the total recorded was 1.19 inches, against 2.90 inches last year for the same month. The driest December occurred in 1931 (.90 inches) and the wettest in 1936 (9.00 inches). The new year has dawned with a continuation of the same broken and changeable weather which characterised the whole of the holiday season. Indications over the week-end were however for a more settled spell in the near future.
