WHAT, NO LOCAL RAG!

WHEN MR BEACON GOES GAY (Contributed) Quite a gloom was cast over Whakatane by the rumour that Mr Beacon—a local land-mark and old identity who goes to press in the Strand three days every week—had celebrated Xmas not wisely but too well, and in consequence had been shut up for seven days in Whakatane's model lockup. However, it seems that Mr Beacon was thoroughly sorry for his conduct, for he was "let out" 011 New Year's Elve. Once again he mingled with the Stranded shoppers, and skipped merrily over suburban gates and hedges, and took a peep inside rural letter boxes. But alas, on New Year's Eve Mr Beacon (being no doubt a Caledonian) could not resist the temptation to "soak up a skinful." At least he was well "inked up." Probably that is why Mr Beacon was dead to the world for the next few days. But the lockup being wanted to relieve the housing shortage, Mr Beacon was released this morning (on probation, no: doubt). Tut, tut, Mr Beacon! Better keep to* the straight and narrow path in future and report to the probation officer. General Public, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until further notice. Footnote: It is true that Mr Beacon had relaxed from his arduous tri-weekly labours during the past fortnight, but the rumour that he was unduly "merry" at Xmas is, after all, "only a rumour." Ed.
