FURTHER DISTRICT LOSSES
SGT. R. G. THOMPSON
After taking part in the Ist Lib-t yan campaign, experiencing action in both Greece and Crete, Sgt. R. G. Thompson of Whakatane was killed in action on November 28 in the course of the present drive through to Benghazi. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs Walter Thompson, of Bridge Street, he was born at OpOrtiki twenty-six years ago, but his parents. shifted almost immediately to Whakatane. Educated locally he later engaged in farming on his own account in the Manawahe district which he carried on successfully till the outbreak of war. He then enlisted at once and sailed with the first echelon. In the army he was as popular with the men as he was in civil life. A keen footballer he represented Rangitaiki, and was acknowledged as an all-round sportsman. He was particularly fond Oif horses and also a regular competitor in the sheep dog trials. Another son Pte Alan Thompson is also serving in the Middle East. The deepest sympathy is- felt for his bereaved family and relatives.
