whakatane meeting The December meeting was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, December 2 Mrs' Berry presiding over about 50 members. The meeting opened with the singing of "Comrades and Friends," and the 1 reading of the aspirations. A letter was received from the Dominion Federation regarding the proposed conference, and the matter was deferred until the February meeting.' A leaflet was received and passed around in connection with the collection of ergot for war purposes; and members weie asked to help wherever, possible. A letter was received from Mrs Burgess, of the W.W.S.A., what at and regarding the meeting of camouflage nets. Mrs Ryde offered to show members' how to make these and the names of members willing to -assist were taken. An appeal for the sale of tickets to aid the King George Memorial Health Gamp, was received, and regretfully declined, owing to so tnany other causes claiming the attention of members. A letter from Mrs Judson, Auckland, asking for knitters for the garments for the Merchant Navy, was favourably received, and Mrs Henderson is to write Mrs Judson in connection with wool supplies. Mrs Sutcliffe proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Littlejohn for her work in connection with the Drama ■Festival, at which Whakatane gained second place. Mrs Berry rose to congratulate the players upon their performance. Mrs Cairns gave an outline of what was being done at dressmaking -classes, and called for enrolments for next year. The resignation of Mrs Berry, who is going to live in Christchurcli, was accepted with regret. Demonstrations: Mrs Print gave a demonstration, of icing cakes, which was followed with interest. Mrs Suckling and Miss Ramson gave a demonstration of tatting, which was also watched with keen interest by members. Roll Call —"Summer Drinks" was ■well responded to. Social Hour —An organised game "Musical Arms" was won by Mrs McKenzie. There followed the exchange of Xmas gifts, enjoyed by all. Competitions resulted as follows: Three novelties, Mrs Print 1. Four pieces home-cured lemon peel: Mrs Lysaght 1. Best Flower, Mrs Berry 1 The Retiring President Mrs Berry rose to wish all members the compliments of the season, and the continued success of the institute in Whakatane. Members rose spontaneously to sing "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow," in honour of Mrs Berry* and the meeting closed with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem.
