SOLDIERS' FAREWELL

DANCE AT AWAKEKI

LARGE NUMBER PRESENT

A verj- large gathering attended a dance held in the Awakeri Hall on the 10th inst when Sergeant-Major Jock Graham and Trooper A'lf. Melville were farewelled. The Victory Band was in excellent form, the dancing most enjoyable and Mr Coll MacDonal-d a very efficient M.C. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Jean Black and Mr Charlie Cruse. In the absence of Mr ML Claris Mr Les Luxton spoke of the excellent service rendered to the district by Sgt-Major Graham, w r ho, owing to the nature of his business, had been able and always most Avilling to assist the people of this centre. Trooper Alf Melville too had proved himself a fine type of citizen. To each soldier Mr Luxton presented a money belt and contents. Private E. Hapgood, an Edgecumbc soldier, who had been unable to attend a farewell function in his own centre was made a presentation on behalf of the Edgecumbe Farewell Committee. Each of the men suitably replied. | During the evening a soldier's cake, kindly donated by Mrs Clans! was won by Mr G. Laing. The function terminated at 1 a.m. with the singing of Auld Lang Ss*ne.
