PUBLIC SPENDING
ORGY IN AUSTRALIA INCREASE IN NON-ESSENTIALS "There can be no doubt that much of the public spending of the past two years has been wasteful and unnecessary in time of war." This is the comment of the National Bank of Australasia bulletin on a recent Federal Government renort on the subject. The report revealed substantial increases in retail trade sales between August, lO.'if), and August, 1941. Sydney sales increased by per cent; Melbourne. ]."> per cent: Brisbane, 2G per cent. Percentage increases in the' official retail price index numbers used for adjusting basic wage rates were as follows: Sydney increased prices, 10 per cent: Melbourne, 9.9 per cent: Brisbane. 11.1 per cent. As to the trend of spending, official and private inquiries showed that over the past two years, in spite of the large number of men (and women) in the services, civilian demand for"* many varieties of clothing had substantially increased since the outbreak of war.
