BAY OF PLENTY BY-ELECTION
LABOUR LOSES MANY VOTES
STRONG LOCAL SUPPORT
The Bay of Plenty By-election about which so much controversy andi inter-party argument has centred was finalised' last Saturday when Sullivan the National candidate beat Mills the Labour candidate by a majority of 1590 votes. Sullivan leiad at 80 cent of the booths, but the most striking feature was the strong support he won at local booths, indicating a change of heart on 'the part of many electors since last general election* The initial count showed the voting to be as under: — W. Sullivan (National) 4452 C. Mills (Labour) 2859 A surprising feature was the percentage of the voting, those cast lepresenting over 70 per cent of the electors which speaks well for the interest created at such a time.i The interest locally was fairly intense at the last moment and following results will indicate the support accorded the candidates in the W hakatane district: — Mills Sullivan •'Ohope Beach 44 65 Taneatua 86 227 Paper Mills 69 35) Whakatane Ctv office 99 196 Whakatanc Bgh office 217 330 Kopeopeo 171 229 Edgecumbe 83 Awakeri Thornton 14 45 Waimana 40 124 Nukuhou North 9 42 Poroporo 6 14 There were also considerable surprises in the southern part el' the •district, while at Opotiki where the new branch of the Democratic Labour Party was. recently formed the results Avere again lieavity in favour of Sullivan. Tn the rural areas the
limber who recorded their votes was considerable and under all the circumstances extraordinary. Even in the remote places there was a representative number cast, a further in--dication of the widespread nature of .the campaign.
