NO NEW YEAR'S CARNIVAL
BY common consent, in deference to the gravity of the war situation the members of the Whakatane New Year Carnival Committee, have decided upon the cancellation of the forthcoming programme. It is pointed out that the blackout regulations will be most stringently enforced, that the travelling public will be greatly handicapped owing to the restricted use of coupons, and finally and most important of all, that many people unfortunately, will not be feeling in the mood for merry making this new year. Indeed it is feared that Christmas itself will be a very sad affair for many families in this district. The Carnival Committee hopes nevertheless to retain a grip on the carnival idea and if it is at all possible to reintroduce the event next year, when it will be hoped the threat to our country will be removed and the outlook for the world will be brighter and less involved.
