WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Wai-niana-Nukuhou Women's "Institute was held in the hall last Wednesday Afternoon. There, was a large attendance of members and visitors, Mrs Hewitt presided. The singing of the Institute song opened the meeting and the singing of "God Defend New Zealand" followed. The minutes were read and correspondence- dealt with. A letter of thanks for a donation to the Leper fund was: read. The Janrrary meeting is to he held on the first Wednesday in that month, and the single girls to take control. The roll call "What I would like from Santa Glaus," was well responded to. The exchange of Christmas gifts followed, each member bringing one, so as every one. sent received one. The golden thread was given by Mrs Miarra, who spoke on New Zealand poets. The matron of the Opotiki hospital, Miss Gillespie, gave a most interesting talk on the life of settlers on the West Coast of the South Island in the early days, and told of the experiences of those who had the first hospital there, it being of tents. Books and magazines were received from members for the Whakatane hospital, and a tray cloth was brought by each member for the Opotiki hospital, and Miss Gillespie judged them and donated a prize, Mrs. T. -Wardlaw being the winner. It was decided to hold the annual flower show in February as usual and to be in the evening. An appeal for fleeces for jackets for seamen in the North Sea was given by Mrs Wylde. The competitions for the day were: Brown Betty, Mrs F. Bell 1, Mrs G. Hewitt 2, Miss Mavis Wardlaw .3. Apron, Mrs Hewitt .1, Mrs T. Wardlaw 2, Mrs I. Savage 3. Best flower, Mrs; F. Bell 1, Mrs: R. Black 2 V Mrs H. Bell 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Bell I. Mirs Hewitt 2, Mrs T. Wardlaw 3. Christmas carols were sung and led by the Glee Club. The judges for the afternoon were Mrs Debrecenv and Miss Gillespie', the president thanking them and the hostesses, and the National Anthem olosed the meeting.
