BY-ELECTION TO THE FORE
ADDED interest, though certainly no advertisement for those occupying high political positions, attends the byelection for the Bay of Plenty seat. The news £>f the apparent collapse of an inter-party agreement between the two official heads can scarcely lead to any increase in the zest of the average elector, and the picture of bitterness and invective being bandied through the press by the two political heads of the country does not add any dignity to the proceedings. However we find this district now well in the throes of the campaign which must take its course. Speakers of either party have been accorded a fair and impartial hearing and we can only deplore the fact that whereas the electors have managed to keep the campaign clean, the two parties concerned have been unable to maintain a more tolerant attitude. Without attempting to cast any blame: on either side we feel that our readers will be with us in condemning the circumstances which made it impossible to keep our election free from this sort of thing.
