TANEATUA ROADS
REPLY TO COMPLAINTS
P.W.D.'s EXPLANA TI ON
A reply to a letter written by the Whakatane County Council complaining about the State Highway from the: Taneatua township and Railway Station has been received. The Council also complained regarding the bad l condition of the WhakataneTaneatua highway.
Tlie reply stated that although it was not the function of the Department to improve the frontages between the roadway itself and the fence line, it was agreed to have this work carried out between the township and the Railway Road.
The spoil was used for lifting tlio water-table level and also to even the grade of the road, but when the work was in progress some weeks of wet weather did not improve conditions and it was necessary for the greater portion of the traffic to use a detour road. This matter was, of course, remedied as soon as the surface dried out.
The balance of the complaint regarding the section from Whakatane to Taneatua was hardly justified, as that section was always in reasonably good order, notwithstanding that there had been a very considerable reduction in maintenance votes this financial year.
If at any time the council received written complaints regarding the lack of maintenance on any of the State Highways system, it was requested that such complaints be forwarded direct to the Public Works Department, Tauranga. when they would receive immediate attention.
