Tar Sealing Work The Borough Council staff is making good progress with the sealing work in Ramson Road. Good Job—Good Fishing Its a great life—for some. At any rate onq good job recently came to notice when a salesman was met who had done his day's work seeking clients in the Taneatua and Waimana districts. He did not enthuse about sales recorded but was quite voluble regarding catching the limit of trout from the Waimana during his day's toil. He added that besides filling his bag h§ had to- throw thirteen small ones back. Beacon in Desert A% letter received locally from SgtMajor Dave Wilsan, of the Middle East Forces, relates that in a resent mail a large bundle of "Beacons" were received and he adds that they were greatly appreciated by the Whakatane lads, who "read every word" in their enthusiasm for news from home. Lupins in Flower Fringing the coast for many miles in the Bay lupins are now gay with j flower and present a prett3 r sight, although one which does not appeal greatly to farmers nearby. The growth of lupins has been prominent locally only in recent years and the spread inland has caused landowners some alarm. Borough Jubilee Residents of the town may not be generally aware that next year marks the Silver Jubilee of the Borough of Whakatane the town attaining the' status of a borough in 1917. The war conditions will no doubt hamper suitable celebration of this forthcoming occasion, but nevertheless it is likely that some fitting observance will be made. Maize Planting Maize planting is proceeding steadily in the district and young crops arc reported to have escaped damage from the very late but rather sharp frost experienced last week. It is likely that not such a great area will be planted this year a small contributing factor being that farmers who> have changed to cheese factory supply are no longer keeping pigs and therefore will not as usual jdant for their own use.
County Affairs' The Whakatane County Council meets to-morroAV to deal with routine business., Plunket Funds As a result of the street appeal made by the local branch of the Plunket Society on Friday a total of £44 has been added to the funds. This figure is a record for such an appeal by the local branch. Car Capsizes j A car driven by Mr S. F. Lyreman, sharemilker, of Otakiri, capsized on the East Bank Road, Thornton, on Friday the driver fortunately escaping injury. The vehicle evidently skidded in loose metal, and came to rest cd its side although not violently. A Good 1 Market It was reported at last Executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union that there is a satisfactory market in the United States for bull and boner cow beef from New Zealand, and that a steady trade in these lines is being conducted by a leading firm of exporters. . Beaches Popular The week-end found beaches very popular aiid a greater number of swimmers venturing into the surf at Ohope. Although the day was dull in the morning the sun broke through the clouds, and provided warm conditions —warmer than many at first suspected judging by the complaints of sunburn received. Trade With Russia At last Executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union a copy o£ a resolution passed at a conference held in the Town Hall, Auckland, purging closer trade relations witli Russia, came forw r ard. The great potentialities of the Russian market were stressed, and the advisability of sending a trade mission to Moscow or inviting a Russian mission to the Dominion was urged. It was decided to approve the resolution on the broad grounds that it was in accord with the. Union's policy of using every endeavour to expand the markets for New Zealand primary products.,
