The Theatres

REGENT

One of thie screen's brightest com-! cdy teams, Ann Sothern and Lew Ayres, will, make its initial bow to mi enthusiastic audience at the Regent Theatre, where the latest in Metro-G oldwy n-May er''s Maisie series, "Maisie Was a Lady" will be screening. With Miss Sothern bringing her ever-present sparkle and a collection of new wisecracks to the part of the stranded showgirl, ana Ayres deserting his Dr Kildare characterisation to play an inebriate playboy, this "Maisie" promises to be the most successful to date. This time, Maisie finds herself in a society background after she loses her job as the "headless woman'" in a carnival sideshow due to the antics of Ayres, and he takes her home to make amends by giving her employment as a maid. Ayres demonstrates j his versatility with a sure and deft touch in the role of the playboy, Bob Rawlston. Adding convincingly to the dramatic qualities of the story is Maureen O'Sullivan as Bobl£ sister, Abby, disillusioned and embittered when she discovers that her money was her only attraction, for her fiance, Link Phillips, ( played by Edward Ashley. C. Aubrey Smith ns the butler, Walpole, who cannot conceal his liking for Maisie despite the fact that she shocks him; Joan Perry as Diana Webley, the girl Phillips jilts .to marry Abby; 'and Paul Cavanagh as "Cap" Rawlston, inattentive clubman father of Bob and Abby, add further to the effectiveness of what is the most impressive cast thus far for a "Maisie" picture.
