LOCAL BODY RIGHTS

EXTRAORDINARY VACANCIES

POWER TO APPOINT

In view of the three vacancies left by the death of the late Mr J. W. Sumner, it is interesting to note that the local authority, in this case the Whakatane County Council has the power to appoint a suitable 1 representative in his stead.

In connection with the Power Board, the .Harbour ■Board and the Hospital Board all of which claimed Mr Sumner's membership, the County Council will therefore be authorised to make its own appointments within the space of 2< months. Failing that, the Governor General lias the right to step in and make the requisite move himself by filling the vacancies by Order in Council.
