POTATO GROWING
SMALLER ACREAGE FIGURES COMPARED Figures published in the last Gazette, compiled from returns forwarded by growers in response to inquiries by the Census and Statistics Office, show that the area estimated as planted or to be planted in potatoes this season is less than for last season. Last season the Dominion total was 16,998 acres and for this season the estimated acreage is 15,500, or 1198 acres less.
It is pointed cut that, although this decrease is shewn, the ligurcs both for potatoes and grains, which are also shown, relate only to holdings of one acre and over outside borough boundaries, and that in the case of potatoes a fair quiantity Is grown on the smaller holdings and on holdings situated within boroughs
The South Ls!and grows twice the quantity of potatoes grown in the North Island, the respective total acreages for last year with the estimated acreages for this season in parentheses being as follows: South Island 11,646 (10.800); North Island 5352 (5000).
The total area in wlieat last year was 245,733 acres, in oats 306,944 acres, and barley 41,088 acres. The estimated acreages in what for the coming season are: North Island (3000 acres; South Island 252,000 acres; total, 258,800 acres. Oats: North Island 11,000 acres; South Island 264,000 acres;, total, 275,000 acres. Barley: North Island 3500 acres; South Island 41,500 acres; total, 45,000 acres.
