WASTE OF FOODSTUFFS

RATS, CATS AND DOGS

LOSS IN GREAT BRITAIN

Talking about waste of foodstuffs in Great Britain, the British Minister of Agriculture said recently that rats destroyed at least 500,000 tons of cereals a year; cats drank many million gallons of milk; dogs in the country (including pet dogs) were estimated to consume the equivalent of one week's food for the whole human population. A lot was heard about the waste of feeding stuffs to keep racehorses in training, said the Minister, but the oats so consumed amounted only to some 5000 or 6000 tons a year which, fed to hens, would produce a quarter of an egg for each member of the population once a year.
