SPEEDING IN BOROUGH

Only a small number of charges wore made against motorists at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrates Court, when Mir E. L. Walton, S.M., presided. That the Transport Department's inspector has been watching the conduct of motorists in King Street and Domain Road, which has been the subject of some criticism, was borne out when a young man was charged with speeding. Arthur Richard Schick was the "speed merchant," Avho the Inspector said passed him in King Street doing 44' m.p.h. on a motor cycle. The Inspector "tailed" the cyclist into Commerce Street where he did j 40 m.p.h. until reaching the busy Friday night shopping area. A fine of £2 with costs 13s was imposed. Other Breaches For haying no warrant of fitness for his motor cycle Pita P'ouwhare j was fined 10s with £1 77s costs. James William Dixon was fined El with costs 12s for having defective lights on his motor. Without Due Care As a sequel to an accident which occurred near the Poroporo store last month John Wineti was charged with driving a motor car without due care and attention. According to Sergeant M. Farrell he was tra. veiling from Whakatane to Paroa, when failing to notice an approaching car a collision occurred. No one had been injured in the accident, and despite the fact that the defendant was handicapped in that he had only and arm and one' eye he was regarded as a careful driver. A fine of £1 Avith costs) £1 3s was imposed.
