LESS ACUTE

THE housing problem which was the bane of Whakatane for many years prior to and during- the present war, is showing signs of abating. The main and possibly most direct reason is the gradual fulfillment of the quota of Government houses which is now nearing completion. One hundred new houses for Whakatane, plus the phenomenally high number of private residences qonstructed during the past five years have almost made it possible to be able to say in the near future that the problem is solved. This statement however cannot be taken to indicate that the shortage of accommodation is permanently solved. The return of the: men from overseas after the present war will bring with it fresh complications, one of the major being—housing. Until such time, however, it is gratifying to note that the town is rapidly approaching the point when its domestic buildings will be nicely offset by the number of tenants requiring them for accommodation.
