WHERE ARE THE FLOWER GROWERS?
WE wonder how many of our readers realised that the annual meeting of the Horticultural Society, which was to have been held last Friday, lapsed for lack of a quorum. Only five persons attended —these being' the same stalwarts who have carried the exhibition through to a successful conclusion for many years past. The position of the town's Horticultural Society is becoming just as precarious as those other useful and necessary organisations which have felt the of war restrictions. Yet if we are to allow them to slip, one by one through our fingers, merely because of the: emergency conditions which are ruling at the present time,, we are to sacrifice the toil of years of ground work and, establishment effort, all of which will have to be recaptured if we diesire.to regain, the progress and cultural enterprise which we enjoy to-day. But we must not forget our social institutions merely because of the war. In. fact it is our duty to make every effort to preserve them. The Horticultural Society's show has given pleasure to hundreds- in the past. It stands for the encouragement of the culture of flowers —something which stands in bright and pleasant contrast with the dominant thoughts of the day. It must not be permitted to lapse. Flower lovers are therefore urged to show their genuine interest by attending the postponed meeting which will be held in the Borough Council Chambers on the afternoon of Friday, November 7.
