RACING NOTES

STAYER OR SPRINTER (?)

Tlie Canterbury entrant, Hearth, has been nominated for the New Zealand Cub and Stewards' Handicap to be run on November 8. It is seldom that a horse has been entered for both events as Cup entrants are trained to run two miles, while those for the Stewards' Handicap, of six furlongs, are merely sprinted in their track Avork. THE FALSE RAIL The Victorian Racing Club and Australian Jockey Club have both decided to dispense with the false rail at the Flemington and Randwick courses. It now remains to< be seen whether certain clubs in New Zealand maj' follow the lead thus given. DEATH OF ILLUMINATION The death occurred at South T'aranalci last week of the Limelight sire, Illumination, a good winner in his day, and in recent years represented on the turf and in crosscountry events by Eirination, All Irish, Loombination, Easter Time, Foot Loose, Lucidus, Erlick, Mio Lume, Royal Nation and Floodlight. MEETING ABANDONED The military authorities being advised the Whangarei Racing Club that Kensington Park will be required for camp purposes the race meeting arranged for October 31 and November 1 has been abandoned. THE BUZZER TRAINING ON Although The Buzzer is not among the acceptors for the New Zealand Cup, he is training on very satisfactorily at Awapuni. He will, be competing at Otaki and Trentliam, and his efforts there should serve to improve him in view of the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. ' BROTHER TO NOBLE FOX At Takanini the two year old colt, Sleepy Fox, is being very highly assessed as he is one of the smartest gallopers located at that sporting centre for some years. A DERBY PROSPECT Since the victory of Regal Fox in the Great Northern Guineas the Foxbridge colt is being talked of as a likely winner of the Great Northern Derby to be decided at Ellerslie on New Year's Day. He has given evidence of being a stayer, and should be right at the top of his form on the eventful day. TRAINED BY OWNER The Foxbridge filly Duvach, taken over to' Australia in company with Kindergarten and Monte Cristo, is now being trained at Randwick by her owner, Mr George Cobb, of Matamata. In a recent start she ran a close second in a big field. PURCHASE OF TOWN SURVEY Mr W. Goosman, M.P., who has lately joined the ranks of racehorse owners, has effected the purchase of the Surveyor gelding, Town Survey, from Mr Martin Tims, of Te AAvamutu. DISCRETION The Te A'wamutu horse, Beau Leon, one of the favourites for the Mitchelson Cup, had his engagement declined on account of the heavy state of the track. During that week ke registered a good track gallop at Kllerslie with Night Pilot, so< much now be nearly ready to race prominently. He may be seen out in the principal event at the Waikato meeting next month. KAIWAKA RESUMES The Taranaki owned hurdler, Kaitvaka, who did the rounds of the Auckland country circuit last season," has just been recommissioned at New Plymouth. As jumpers sometimes improve with age Kaiwaka may be quite in the limelight in the next few months. RACING INTO FORM The Beau Pere mare, Taurangi, is being raced into form in vie\% of her New Zealand Clip engagement. She is reported to be improving with everv gallop, and strong hopes are entertained that she will through a thorough preparation. THE CHURCHILL STEEPLECHASE Auckland provincial entrants for the Churchill Steeplechase of £1000 to be run at Trentliam this month arc General Ruse, Clansman, Fat Boy, Dauber, Pertinax, The Dozer; King Rev, Wharemanea, Conflagration and Smilin' Thru'.
