ABOUT MONEY

Paper money was first used in Europe 400 j r ears ago by a Spanish general, Count de Tendilla, according to a document discovered in the archiA r es of the University of Hendelberg, Germany. In 1484 the count Avas unable to pay his soldiers, and conceived the idea of issuing 'Vouchers" in place of cash. As the vouchers Avere honoured merchants accepted them, and thus the first paper monej T passed into circulation in Europe.

Guineas were so named from having been first coined of gold brought by the African Company from the coast of Guinea in 1663. A guinea was valued then at 20s, but it Avas was 80s in 1695. It Avas reduced at various times, in 1717 to 21s. In 1810 guineas Avere sold for 22s 6d; bi 1816 for 275. In 1811 an Act forbade their sale at a price aboA'c 21s.

Having been coined of African gold, the, first guineas bore the impression of an elephant.

The Angel was a gold coin, impressed Avith an angel. It Avas valued at 6s Sd in tlie reign of Elizabeth in 1062.
