THE NEW V.C.'s

Many Bicycles,

J Whakatane's cycling population has greatly increased since petrol restrictions were introduced, and in spite of the fact that two 14-stand cycle racks have this week been placed in the Strand, the accommodation remains in sufficient. Tha Transport Department's Inspector has asked that a further stand bo placed near the Regent Theatre.

JLand Drainage Work,

THE thrill of pride which greeted the news of the two V.C. awards to members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces for gallantry in Crete brings the Dominion and its people closer to the realities of war. The Cretan campaign was packed full of deeds of splendid heroism by many thousands, the greater portion of which will probably never see the light of day. The claims for special 'merit were therefore with-held for more careful scrutiny and investigation $ until long after the lesser awards had been announced. The great news signifies once again that New Zealand's fighting men can be depended upon to rise to the greatest heights of bravery whenever the occasion warrants and Whakatane's link with one of yesterday's recipients of the. highest award 'for valour' has increased, still further our pride in the honour which has fallen, to two of the Dominion's sons.

Good progress has been made by the Lands Department's dredge which is deepening the Eastern Drain southwards from its outlet into the Orini Creek on the Whakatane-Mat-nta main road. This work is expected to give greatly improved drainage to a large area of low country which is being developed by settlers along the Eastern Drain Road.
