In 1938 the total number of building permits issued in the larger centres of population was 6816, of which , 1895 Avere houses built • by; the State. In 1939 6785 permits were issued, of which 3445 were for State houses, and in the year 1940 the permits issued numbered 6147, o£ which 3870 were for State houses.,

The decline in the number of houses built by private enterprise during the three years Avas from 4921 in 1938 to 3340 in 1939 and 2277 in 1940, or 33 per cent in 1939 and over 50 per cent in 1940. The withdrawal of labour from house construction to employment on military and other w.ar work, as well as the increased cost of timber and labour, probably accounted for the heavy fall in the number of houses built by private enterprise during the past two years

Tire Abstract of Statistics for July states that the aggregate value represented by permits issued in tbe first six months of 1941 Avas £3,909,251, as compared with £4,705,652 and £5,330,148 in that period of 1940 and 1939 respectively.
