letter from minister
Keen interest in the proposed Whakatane War Memorial Museum was expressed by the Minister of Internal Affairs in a letter read at Monday's! meeting of the Borough Council. The Minister iin his voluntary fetter stated that he had fead the articles in connection with the Museum in the BEACON and was willing to give any advice possible.
The letter suggested a list cf articles suitable for storage as follows: Letters, dairies, photographs of people, places, buildings, pahs, early business records, account books etc., survey plans and maps, measured drawings of churches if good buildings, weapons both Maori and pakeha, household furniture and appliances (even the most humble if of historical interest), Maori carvings, clothing and home spun textiles and farm implements.
Continuing the Minister stated that any "further information his Department might be in the position to give would be readVy forthcoming
Storage of Material
His Worship the Mayor stated that a letter had been received from the Chamber of Commerce asking if the Council could provide storage spac<> for articles collected. He stated that the town clerk (Mr D. V. Saunders) liad expressed Avillingness to safeguard documents and articles which were not bulky, the available space being limited. "I take it lie could not store a spinning wheel or a buggy." lie said.
