Better Signposting;. At Monday's meeting of the Bor J ough Council-the Mayor stated that better signposting was needed in Crete Street. Motorists frequently think it is a continuation of Salon-, ika Street and he suggested the signs could perhaps be made more conspicuous Future Need®. "A new Rest Room will sooner or later be needed," commented the Mayor at Monday's meeting of the Borough Council when the proposed new men's conveniences were being discussed. He suggested that when meeting the Harbour Board a suggestion might be made that they reserve space on the reclamation area near the Rock for a Rest Room. Conveniences in Strand 1 . Referring to the matter at Monday's Borough Council meeting of an Additional convenience at the western end of the Strand, the clerk reported that the existing men's convenience was erected in 1930/31 at a cost of £380. The Health Inspector had intimated that, for this purpose, a septic tank and outfall could be arranged at a location near to the Rock. It was decided that the Worka Committee inspect the locality and consider the question of site.
Water Main Repairs. The Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Coy is to commence the concrete lining of a section of the Commerce Street south water main shortly. Plenty of Power. "U was town not far from Whakatane recently and in a meeting room no less than eighteen lights were burning," said Cr W. Sullivan at Monday's meeting in support of his contention that the distribution of power was unfair. New Bicycle Stands. The Borough Council on Monday added another two bicycle stands to those already existing in the Strand. One has been placed at the corner near the Automobile Association office and the. other outside the Post Office and both were made ready use of by the many cyclists, who for many months have had to leave their machines outside buildings, in gutters or in nearby alley Avays. Bulk Power Charges. A request to the Government for a reduction in its bulk power charges which has become a hardy annual, was again made by the conference of the Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities' Association in Wellington, when a remit on the subject from the Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board was carried. Some boards are spending more than 50 per cent of their revenue in the purchase of current.
License Refused!. The Borough Council has declined an application for a taxi driver's license received from Pango Whetu. Donation Refused. At Monday's meeting the Borough Council declined a request for financial assistance received from the Workers' Educational Association. Stock Impounded. During last month two bulls and six cows were impounded by the Borough Inspector. The cows and one bull were released, the other bull being unclaimed, was soldWhakatane Golf Club. There will be no competition on Saturday. Players will arrange own partners. The week-end will be open to all players intending lo compete in the forthcoming Labour week-end tournament. Borough Finance. Accounts totalling £1175 8s 5d were passed for payment at Monday's meeting of the Borough Council. The General Account stood at Dr. £37 3s 7d and the Electricity Department Cr £1167 16s 7d. Building in Town. Building permits to the value of £1212 were issued by the town clerk last month. These concerned four additions to residences, one new residence, a garage and additions to a garage.
Douglas Street Bridge. No tenders were received by the Borough Council for the work of building the new bridge in Douglas Street, and the foreman-engineer with the Borough staff is to put the work in hand. New Rubbish Dump. The chairman of the Borough Council Works Committee (Cr S. S. Shapley) and the engineer (Mr W. S. Henderson) are this month to investigate the question of a site for the new rubbish dump and report to the Works Committee. Rubbish Dump Refuse. The Borough Council on Monday adopted a recommendation received from the Health Inspector that a notice be erected at the rubbish dump prohibiting the tipping of any refuse containing substances that would provide food for rats. Credit Where Due. "I suppose you will thank the Works Committee for getting the work done," remarked Cr S. S, Shapley, when Cγ Mulholland expressed pleasure at seeing two new bicycle stands in the Strand. "I will thank the Works Engineer for doing the work," smartly retorted Cr Mulholland. Golf Tournament. Golfers are looking forward to the annual open tournament of the Whakatane Golf Club to be held this year at Labour Day Week-end commencing at midday on Saturday, October 25. The committee has been advised of entries from several clubs of other districts and a full list is expected. The course at Paroa is in very good condition at this time of the year and presents a very attractive appearance.
