Shortage of Seed.

Serious shortages of seeds for winter feed crops are reported by Christchurch merchants. They say that there are not sufficient turnip, mangel, swede and chou moellier seeds in New Zealand for ordinary sowings. Supplies would have to be rationed to farmers, who would be forced to alternative crops, such as ryegrass and oats, for green feed. "White turnip seeds which provide one of the main crops, will' be in particularly short supply," said one merchant. "My firm has only onefifth of its turnip requirements, and serious deficiencies in other lines." Shortages had arisen, it was explained, because the provision made for growing turnip crops for seed purposes had been insufficient, and the crops harvested had yielded, poorly.
