ESCAPE FROM GREECE
NELSON MAN LIVED TWO MONTHS ON HILLS
His escape, frcm a German prison camp in Crete, from where lie made his way back to Egypt, is described by Temporary Corporal G. Gheyne, Nelson, in a letter to his father.
Corporal Cheyne left New Zealand in April, 1940, and Avas officially posted missing on August 25, 1941.

"I Avas taken prisoner by the Germans in Crete on Julj' 1, and with other prisoners Avas taken to a German prison camp <?n the island. After 20 days there I escaped, antl with some other men lived on the hills of Crete for tAvo months. After giA-ing up hope, we got a boat and made" our Avay to Egypt. It Avas a happy day Avhen Ave landed there, and I am sure God must have been with us all th* Avay. I am in perfect health and am at present in Cairo on days 'suiwiA'ors' leave'."
